What is Motability Scheme?

The Motability Scheme is a government-backed initiative that provides motorists with a disability a lease on a brand new car from selected manufacturers.

Can I get a Motability Car?

​Eligibility for the Motability Scheme depends on the disability allowance you’re currently in receipt of and the length of award you have remaining. To qualify, you should have at least 12 months’ allowance on the High Rate Mobility DLA (Disability Living Allowance), Enhanced Mobility PIP (Personal Independence Payment), War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS), the Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP), or be the Carer/Parent of a child (over three years in age) that qualifies for High Rate Mobility DLA.

How long does the Motability lease last?

The lease on a Motability Scheme vehicle typically lasts for three years.

What happens at the end of a lease?

Close

At the end of your lease, you will simply be required to return the vehicle to the dealership from which it came. You will then be able to choose a new model. A reminder letter will be sent three months before the end of the lease to ensure you’ll never be without a vehicle.

What does the Motability lease include?

Not only does the scheme provide you with a brand-new car, but you also benefit from comprehensive insurance, road tax, breakdown cover and roadside assistance, and any adaptations that may be required.

Who can drive my Motability Car?

Up to three named drivers can be added to your agreement and be able to drive your vehicle.

What are the rates for Motability allowance in the UK?

Depending on the mobility supplement you receive, the rates will vary. Both the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HMRC DLA) and the Enhanced Rate of Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP) are currently £59.75 per week; the War Pensioner's Mobility Supplement (WPMS) is currently £66.75 per week; and the Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) is currently £145.35 per week.

How to apply for Motability cars?

Motability payments start every year on March 5.

Can I change my Motability car early?

Yes. However, please note that changing your Motability car early may incur an additional administration fee.

Are Motability cars exempt from congestion charge?

As part of the scheme, you will not be required to pay any congestion charges that may otherwise be applicable.
